Hope Attending Conference For Great Lakes

Municipal leaders from both Canada and the United States will meet in Montreal next month to talk about the Great Lakes.

Mayor Randy Hope will be at an annual conference hosted by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.

Hope says a key point he's looking to address is the health of Lake Erie.

"I held a meeting last week with a group over the issue of the algae blooms, we're continuing to move that," he says.

Hope adds he's been working with other mayors from the U.S. to help bring a stronger voice to the issue.

"I'll continue to work with my colleagues from the United States -- the mayor of Milwaukee, the mayor of Chicago, the mayor of Niagara Falls, New York -- all those individuals will be there and we'll be planning our strategy," he says.

Letters regarding Lake Erie algal blooms have been sent to several government officials including the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, as well as the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Chatham-Kent council voted for the letters to be sent following a meeting in April, which requested for the provincial and federal governments to create and implement an action plan to restore health to Lake Erie.
