Festival Of Golf Goes 'Around The World'

The Fabulous Festival of Golf is coming back to Chatham-Kent this September.

And this year, it'll feature a chance to win $1-million in a hole-in-one challenge.

Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent Children's Treatment Centre Foundation Mike Genge says they wanted something new to make the event even bigger.

"You go out, you look, you find out where you can do these things," says Genge. "Ten people will get out and they'll qualify by pulling a ball out of a box -- all ten of them will tee up on the ninth hole and if they get a hole-in-one, they get a million bucks."

The inaugural event in 2016 had a Las Vegas theme, but this year, organizers wanted to go bigger, so they chose to go with "Around the World."

"Every hole is going to be themed from a different country," says Genge. "We're going to have Germany, Mexico, USA, Canada, the Dominican Republic -- that's our cigar hole -- and we're going to have every country labelled on each hole."

Some of the highlights for this year's event include:

- dozens of prizes including a brand new Ford Mustang from Victory Ford Lincoln

- four holes featuring tacos, sushi, ribs, and oktoberfest sausage all day for golfers

- life-size beer pong

- a jousting ring

- a mariachi band

In addition to all of the prizes, the event will also feature a live-auction with three items up for bidding. They include a handcrafted bar made by Windmill Cabinets, a Fender guitar signed by Bruce Springsteen, and a Masters Legends photo signed by prolific golfers Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player.

Just like last year, the golf tournament will raise money for the Chatham-Kent Children's Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent. The 2016 event raised around $53,000.

Willow Ridge Golf Club is this year's host, with a shotgun start set for 11am on September 22, 2017.

The 152-golfer registration is already full, but Genge says they are taking names for a waiting list and they are still looking for volunteers to help out.

"It's a big event and we need at least two volunteers for each hole... and then we need people to help out with registration, and food, and all the other kind of stuff," says Genge. "The volunteers work hard, but they get to have a lot of fun and they get to see a lot of fun."

Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Mike Genge or Shelby Sanchuk at 519-354-0520 ext. 266.
