UPDATE: SIU Confirms Police Shooting In Downtown Windsor

The province’s Special Investigations Unit is investigating the fatal police shooting of a 33-year-old man in downtown Windsor.

Windsor police shut down the corner of Wyandotte St. E and Goyeau St. shortly after 8am Wednesday following the incident outside the McDonald’s restaurant.

Downtown resident John Hilt says he was walking downtown Wednesday morning to catch a bus when he heard gunshots ring out.

“I walked by Shoppers Drug Mart, and I heard some shots, and I was like… whoa, and I came across the corner, and when I got just passed the door at Shoppers Drug Mart I saw a guy on the ground and police were attending to him,” says Hilt.

The area was taped off, and traffic to the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel was disrupted for a short period.

During a brief statement by the Windsor Police Service, Deputy Chief Vince Powers says police were called to the area around 8:05am Wednesday. During an interaction with the male, an officer fired their issued pistol.

“The involved adult male was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later succumbed to his injuries. The male’s next of kin has been notified. Two officers were brought to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries,” says Powers.

Behind the McDonald’s drive-thru at Goyeau St and Wyandotte St. Wednesday morning, a knife block and a number of knives were scattered on the ground.

Police would not answer any questions surrounding the incident because of the involvement of the Special Investigations Unit. The SIU has six investigators and four forensic investigators on the scene.

The post-mortem on the man killed is scheduled for Thursday in London.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have witnessed the event or have photos or video to contact them at 1-800-787-8529.

All roads in the area have since been reopened to traffic.
