Chatham-Kent's Sex Offenders List Grows In 2017

Chatham-Kent police report that they had 235 male sex offenders registered in 2017 and no female sex offenders.

A police report shows that it's a jump of 13 from 2016 because they were either released from jail or moved to the area. Sources say four or five sex offenders have moved to Chatham-Kent over the last year because it's cheaper to live here.

Detective Constable Gary Oriet says the number of offenders registered is about average for a community our size and police always keep track of where they're living.

"We're hand in hand with the rest of the jurisdictions in Ontario and we monitor where they're living," says Oriet.

Last year, five sex offenders were arrested for not complying with their restrictions and not following the law.

Most of the offences committed by those on the sex registry are sexual assault, sexual interference and child pornography.

Oriet says sex offenders must tell police when and where they're moving to avoid arrest.

"They have an obligation to notify police. We have a very high compliance rate across the province, I believe it's 98% compared to the U.S. where some states have a 20% compliance rate," he says.

Oriet says police always check to make sure sex offenders are living where they say they're living.

"As a police service I'm glad that we have a 98% compliance rate and the other 2% of those people have warrants issued for their arrest," Oriet says.
