Canada Day Fireworks In Chatham Could Be Silenced

The Canada Day fireworks display in Chatham this summer could be cancelled if a major sponsor doesn't step up.

Kevin Neill, treasurer for the Chatham Canada Day Committee, says last year's fireworks display cost around $17,000 and the committee needs at least $10,000 to put on the production this year.

Neill says a decision needs to be made in about two weeks.

"We're facing a rather difficult decision in the next couple of weeks. Without a major sponsor we will not be able to put on the fireworks show similar to what we did last year and cancelling that is the last thing we want to do," says Neill.

Neill says the fireworks are set for June 30 at 9:45pm, weather-permitting, at St. Clair College Thames Campus.

He says other Canada Day events, like bands and cake, will go ahead at Tecumseh Park July 1st with a parade in the morning.

Neill says sponsors don't have much time to reach out.

"We've reached out to a number of companies in the community. Some have responded that funds are tied up elsewhere and others are not responding at all, which has been extremely disappointing," he says.

Neill says the fireworks company must know soon if it's doing the show in Chatham or if it has to book another show somewhere else.

"We continue to beat the bushes trying to find somebody that will essentially save the fireworks for us this year," Neill says.
