A Chatham councillor says a rainbow crosswalk should hopefully be painted in time for this summer's Pride celebrations, but it's going to need a new location.
Brock McGregor says the proposed change in location is due to some delayed work at the intersection of King St. and Second St. where the rainbow crosswalk was originally supposed to go.
"That work was supposed to happen at the beginning of this year and it didn't, so if the crosswalk went there, there would be roadwork over top of it within the next year," says McGregor. "Rather than put it down and have it destroyed within a year, it made sense to move it to an alternate location."
McGregor says a report will be coming to the council meeting in July recommending that the location for the rainbow crosswalk be changed to the intersection of King St. and Forysth St. in Chatham.
"I think that's a pretty central location. It's right in the hub of downtown. There's lots of walkable activities that occur down there. It really still is a pretty high visibility spot, while still being on a piece of roadway that's not used overly often. Hopefully, it will last as long as it can," he explains.
McGregor says the municipality is still aiming for an August installation.
"We're hoping that it's still going to make that August date, before some of the Pride activities in Chatham-Kent," says McGregor. "We're just working towards that and excited for the community to have this type of project completed."
