A new scholarship will be available for a Dresden minor hockey player in honour of local legend Ken (Doc) Houston.
This Sunday there will be a fundraiser for the scholarship at Dresden Raceway. It is the first time the scholarship will be handed out and track announcer Gary Patterson said the recipient has to be local and has to earn it.
"It's for someone who has spent their formative years in Dresden minor hockey and is graduating high school," Patterson said. "The successful candidate will show a passion for hockey, be drive with a strong work ethic. He or she will have a solid moral compass and be a leader on and off the ice. They'll have strong respect for their peers, coaches and teachers while earning that same respect back."
Patterson added those in attendance will be entertained by the Ken (Doc) Houston Memorial Pace and get a chance to win autographed jerseys from some of hockey's best former and current players via a silent auction.
The announcer said guests may even get to meet some players.
"First of all, our own TJ Brodie is going to be there," Patterson said. "One of the great young players in the NHL today. he's a veteran, but still young. Also, Eric Vail will be there. He played with Kenny in Atlanta. John Gould who was a captain in Atlanta will be there. Pat Ribble will also be there, who is from Leamington."
Patterson said there will be a few more players from Doc Houston's days in attendance.
Anyone looking for more information about the scholarship and auction can visit Dresden Raceway's website or show up at the track on Sunday. Patterson said players will be signing autographs from 12:45pm to 1:30pm.
