Tips To Stay Safe This Long Weekend

With the extreme heat and very dry conditions this Canada Day long weekend, safety should be the top priority for those going outdoors.

Chatham-Kent Fire Chief Chris Case says people spending time outside need to keep hydrated and motorists need to really watch out for kids now that they're out of school. Most importantly though, anyone planning to have a fire or lighting fireworks needs to keep a clear head.

"There may be good wine and cheer this weekend and other alcohol consumed," Case said. "If you're looking after the campfire or fireworks, it'd probably be best if you refrain from the alcoholic beverages so you can safely keep an eye on things whilst the day progresses."

Case added the health unit and Environment Canada have issued heat warnings and he advised people who are drinking alcohol to make sure they drink water as well because alcohol can accelerate dehydration.

Case said the heat can have big impacts on our furry friends as well and not just by leaving them in cars.

"The pavement gets extremely hot and especially for pets," Case said. "We were reading a report from some of our colleagues saying the pavement can so hot it actually burns your pet's feet, so keep an eye on things."

Case said anyone with questions about whether they need a permit to have a fire can check out the fire department's website. He added fire pits or chimameas might not need permits, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

The fire chief said residents can find all the rules and regulations pertaining to how far from a fence or cable wires a fire can be. He added people should also ask neighbours before having a fire to make sure it won't bother them.
