CK United Way sets 2018 fundraising goal at over $1.5M

The United Way of Chatham-Kent is getting ready for its next year of events as organizers set new fundraising goals.

The organization held its annual campaign kick-off event Friday evening.

Campaign Chair Caterina Dawson said the 2018 goal is $1.559 million. The goal does come a little under what was raised during 2017. The total raised last year was $1,687,048, which was short of their original $1.725 million goal.

“Setting this year’s goal was difficult," said Dawson in a statement. "There are a lot of worthwhile things happening in Chatham-Kent, many in the next month. But we did our homework and talking to our partners we came up with a goal that we feel represents what we can achieve this year."

Tom Slager, director of resource development, said they're hopeful that the organization will be able to reach the 2018 goal with the help of their volunteers and new campaign chair.

"We do this to help people," said Slager. "We're telling some of their stories this year, we're really looking forward to that. We'll have stories of strength, hope, and belonging again this year."

As stated in a media release, some organizations such as CLAC, Union Gas, Teksavvy, and individuals have already pledged over $300,000 to the local United Way.

"Things can change [for people] at any point," said Slager. "If they need help, United Way and the programs that are supported by those donations are there to help them when they need it."

There are some upcoming events to keep an eye on, they include the Harvest Run on September 23, Red Feather Week for students, and a golf tournament at the end of the month. Events can be found at the United Way's website.
