'Making Ontario Open For Business Act' to be discussed locally

Business owners with questions or concerns regarding Bill 47 are encouraged to attend an upcoming information session in Chatham.

The Ministry of Labour along with the Chatham-Kent Small Business Centre will be hosting the free event at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre on February 21, at 5:30 p.m.

Bill 47, the Making Ontario Open for Business Act, was made law in November 2018 and came into effect January 1, 2019. As a result, some changes were made in the Employment Standards Act, one of which includes the freeze on minimum wage at $14 an hour. The information session will provide updates to residents about the current changes.

“Bill 47 rolls back several major employment and labour reforms introduced through Bill 148 last year and the new bill introduces several additional changes,” said Rosemarie Montgomery, a small business consultant with Chatham-Kent Economic Development. “It’s very important that companies of all size understand what has changed and how it will impact their business.”

Debra Kokovai, regional program coordinator with the Ministry of Labour, Employment Standards Operations Division, will be on hand at the event. She will be the keynote presenter and will also answer questions residents may have.
