Concerns raised over breaking ice

As weather conditions continue to change, Chatham-Kent Fire & Emergency Services is reminding residents to be cautious around ice-covered waterways.

“This time of year with temperatures rising and falling, it is even more important to be aware of the changing ice conditions,” said Fire and Paramedic Chief Bob Crawford. “Please take care of yourself, your children, and your pets.”

Residents are asked to avoid walking on "unfamiliar ice" and keep in mind that the thickness of ice can change in different areas.

According to a media release, drownings typically happen between October and April. The latest incident was reported on January 29, when a 62-year-old man fell through the ice in Mitchell’s Bay.

Several fire/EMS stations are placed near waterways such as the Sydenham River, Thames River, and Lake Erie, in case a rescue is required.

In the meantime, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood outlook statement. Ice is expected to break on the Thames River and there is potential for localized flooding.
