Jewellery theft in Chatham

Another jewellery theft has been reported in Chatham.

Police said someone broke into a home on McNaughton Avenue East sometime between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The break-in caused about $1,000 worth of damages and a "large amount" of jewellery was reported stolen.

The theft happened shortly after $2,500 worth of jewellery was stolen from a residence on Taylor Avenue in a separate incident.

Phone scam reported

Chatham-Kent police are reminding residents to be aware of phone scams after a man was asked to transfer $8,500 to help his granddaughter.

Police said the man recently received a call from someone who claimed to be his grandchild in Alberta. Then another voice on the line claimed to be her lawyer and said she needed $8,500.

Although the man does have a granddaughter in Alberta he knew this was a scam and reported it immediately. Residents who receive a similar call are asked to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Charge laid in a domestic disturbance

A 23-year-old Wallaceburg man has been charged with assault following a domestic disturbance.

Officers were called to an apartment in Wallaceburg Tuesday night. Police said the 23-year-old has since been released and has a future court date set for April 24.

Multiple break-ins reported

Police are investigating several unrelated thefts across the municipality.

A break-in at a residence on Ursuline Avenue in Chatham has caused about $2,000 worth of damages. Police said the break-in happened sometime between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Tuesday. A white MacBook Air, a black Toshiba laptop, and a black Sennheiser microphone have been reported stolen.

Sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning, officers said an unknown suspect(s) broke into a house which was under construction on Croton Line in Dresden. About $4,500 worth of power tools and $2,000 worth of door handles have been reported stolen.

In Romney Township, jewellery and medication have been reported stolen from a residence on 4th Concession Line. Police said the break-in happened sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Several drivers charged

Over a dozen drivers are facing charges after officers conducted a couple of speed enforcement stops on Tuesday.

Police said over 60 vehicles drove through the enforcement area on Middle Line, of those vehicles two were stopped. Two people have been charged with speeding.

In the meantime, 12 drivers were charged with different offences Tuesday night after they were stopped by traffic enforcement officers on Longwoods Road.

Wanted man turns himself in

A 56-year-old man on the Wanted List has turned himself in to police.

The man from Tilbury has been charged in connection with a shoplifting incident at the Real Canadian Superstore in Chatham and failing to attend court.

He has a future court date set for April 24.
