Chatham man involved in fatal 2017 crash sentenced

A Chatham man charged in a 2017 crash, which resulted in the death of a 24-year-old, has been sentenced to two years in jail.

Court services staff confirmed to Blackburn News that the sentencing for Jesse Ostapec came down in a Chatham courtroom on Wednesday. Ostapec was involved in a head-on collision in October 2017, on Queen’s Line just west of Sinclair Rd. in Tilbury. The collision resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man from Wyoming.

Ostapec, who was 22-years-old at the time of the crash, was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. He was later charged with criminal negligence causing death.

Court staff said Ostapec pleaded guilty to dangerous operation causing death in February 2019.

In addition to two years in jail, Ostapec has been handed a driving prohibition of 688 days and a 10-year weapons ban.
