A new national human trafficking hotline has been launched across Canada.
The Canadian Human Trafficking Hotline is a confidential, multilingual service that operates around the clock to connect victims and survivors with social services, law enforcement, and emergency services. It can also receive tips from the public.
"The hotline will use a victim-centred approach to connect human trafficking victims and survivors with emergency, transition, and long-term supports and services," said the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking (CCEHT), which operates the hotline.
The CCEHT said the hotline is not a government entity. Nor is it an immigration, investigative, or law enforcement agency. It added that guidance is done by experts and accounts for the possibility of unintended consequences.
The hotline is aimed at deterring future trafficking and helping victims safely leave situations of human trafficking.
All communication with the hotline is confidential within the boundaries of the law and does not release identifying information about a caller unless given permission to do so by the caller.
The hotline also works to educate and equip the anti-trafficking community, stakeholders, governments, and other partners with the knowledge and tools necessary to combat trafficking.
