Assault charge laid after altercation during minor football game

An 18-year-old Hamilton teen is facing two assault charges in connection with an incident that took place during a football game in Chatham.

Chatham-Kent police have confirmed to Blackburn News that the Hamilton teen was charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon on Saturday, June 8 in connection with an incident during a minor football game on Saturday, May 25, 2019.

It's alleged a member of the Varsity Chatham-Kent Cougars and a member of the Varsity Hamilton Hurricanes were involved in a confrontation on the field during a game at Chatham-Kent Secondary School when the accused punched the Cougars player in the face.

A team official with the Cougars confirmed that the victim is out for the rest of the season after reportedly suffering two fractures to his orbital bone. The official who spoke with Blackburn News said the player who was hit is expected to make a full recovery.

Police said the accused in the case was charged and released from custody with conditions and a future court date.
