No injuries reported after kitchen fire

Chatham-Kent fire crews are pegging the damages at $25,000 after a supper-time fire at a home on St. Clair Street in Chatham.

Police said crews from Stations 1 and 2 were called to the scene at around 6:20 p.m. after a fire broke out in the kitchen of a residence.

Firefighters were able to put it out quickly and prevented the flames from spreading beyond the kitchen -- they also stuck around until the smoke was cleared out.

Fire officials said a mother and child escaped safely without any injuries.

Investigators said cooking is getting the blame for sparking the blaze and as a result, they're reminding residents to never leave cooking food on the stovetop unattended and to keep a close eye on any food that's cooking inside the oven.

You should also keep your cooking areas clean and clear of any items that could catch fire such as potholders, towels, rags, drapes, etc.

Officials are also advising you to keep children and pets away from cooking areas and to turn pot handles inward when they're on the stovetop so that they can't be bumped accidentally and so that children can't grab them.
