Municipal officials: Election signs need to come down

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is gently reminding the public that all federal election signs need to be taken down by Saturday.

Judy Smith, Chatham-Kent's Director of Municipal Governance/Clerk, said under the municipality's election regulations, the signs must be removed within five days after the voting period.

Smith said candidates will be notified and must remove signs promptly from municipal property, according to the municipal bylaw.

"They have received the sign bylaw and notified that is the time period and if they have not been removed at such time when they're on municipal property, we would be removing them and putting them at the garage for their pickup," Smith said.

Smith said if any sign is forgotten it is kept at the public works garage for two weeks.

"If there happened to be one that is up... perhaps they forgot on the back road or something like that, the public works garage supervisors will remove it and we will notify them that we have it at their garage and they have 14 days to come and pick it up, otherwise it will be destroyed," she added.

Smith said signs on private property don't fall under the municipal bylaw and the municipality doesn't have any jurisdiction over them.

"It's not our intent that municipal employees will be removing the candidate's signs, it's actually [the candidate's] responsibility," said Smith.

Smith said candidates are usually good at picking up their signs on time and she has not received any complaints yet.
