Province cracks down on advertising for vaping

Starting January 1, only specialty vape and cannabis retail stores will be allowed to put up posters promoting vaping products and e-cigarettes.

Minister of Health Christine Elliott said her government is taking urgent action to discourage youth vaping.

"Restricting the promotion of vapour products in retail stores will help prevent youth from being exposed and influenced by promotion in retail settings," she said.

It means convenience stores and gas stations will no longer be allowed to put up posters promoting vaping.

Health units should welcome the announcement. They have called for restrictions on advertising.

Vaping has been connected to severe pulmonary illness. Health Canada said there had been two confirmed cases of lung disease in Quebec. Two other cases in New Brunswick and one in B.C. are classified as probable cases.

Another case was reported in London last month.

In the U.S., there have been 34 deaths and more than 1,000 illnesses reported.

"Vaping is not without risk, and the potential long-term effects of vaping remain uncertain," said Elliott. "As we continue to engage with experts and families to identify further action we can take to protect our youth, this first step will help begin to curb the alarming increase in young people vaping."

The Ontario government said it consulted with experts, communities, and families concerned with youth vaping, along with emerging research from health experts who warn youth vaping is on the rise.
