Moraviantown man sentenced for $170K property crime spree

A Moraviantown First Nation man who previously pleaded guilty to stealing an estimated $170,000 worth of property, was sentenced to an additional four months in jail Tuesday.

Anthony Snake, 48, appeared in Sarnia court where Justice Deborah Austin handed him a time-served sentence plus four months, about 16 months in total, followed by 18 months probation.

The Crown was seeking an additional seven-and-a-half to 10-month sentence on top of time served, while Snake's defence counsel, Robert Mcfadden of Sarnia, suggested an additional sentence of no more than 90 days.

Mcfadden also proposed the court take into account a similar conviction in Chatham in which Snake received a 128-day sentence in April.

In her ruling, Justice Austin said the totality of the crimes is something she should consider, and that she was impressed with how honest Snake was with his probation officer about his past struggles with substance abuse.

Snake was charged in May following a major investigation led by Lambton OPP where police recovered a wide variety of stolen property linked to at least 20 break, enter and theft occurrences throughout Lambton, Elgin, Kent and Middlesex counties.

Recovered items included a pickup truck, motorcycle, two ATVs, two utility trailers, computers, cameras and gaming consoles, construction equipment and power tools, a generator, sporting equipment, and collectible hockey cards and figurines.
