Family New Year's Eve celebrations

If you're looking for a fun way to ring in the new year with the family, local municipalities have you covered with free skates, swims, and fireworks.

The City of Windsor is hosting a New Year's Eve-ning celebration at the WFCU Centre. Free swims and skates will be offered between 7 p.m to 9 p.m., followed by a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.  City staff have also reopened Bright Lights Windsor in Jackson Park. The event was temporarily closed Monday night because of high winds knocking over displays.

The Town of LaSalle is also offering free swimming and skating at the Vollmer Complex throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Time slots start at 1 p.m. and run until 7 p.m. Staff have warned that the pool and rinks always reach capacity, but you can pre-register or check capacity at the town's website. Fireworks will be launched behind the outdoor pavilion starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Harrow and Colchester South Chamber of Commerce is hosting a New Year's Eve party at the Harrow Arena starting a 6 p.m. There will be a ball drop and fireworks display at 9 p.m.

The Town of Lakeshore is welcoming families to the Atlas Tube Centre for free swimming and skating throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Swim times start at 1:30 p.m. while skating doesn't start until 2:00 p.m. There will also be a fireworks display at 7:30 p.m.

Residents in Kingsville can enjoy a free skate at the Kingsville Arena between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. thanks to the Kingsville Knights of Columbus.

Finally, if you have older children and you're looking for a family-friendly event that will take you right into the next decade you may want to try the First Night New Year's Eve celebration at the Tilbury Arena. The event runs from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. and offers skating, crafts, face painting and music. Entry is free but organizers are collecting non-perishable food items or cash donations if you are able.
