Ribfest gears up for another year in Chatham

Rib fans are in for a treat this weekend as the Chatham-Kent Ribfest returns to Tecumseh Park.

Taking place on July 5-7, Ribfest will feature ribs from several different vendors as well as a variety of family-friendly events.

Besides fresh ribs smoking on the grill, event organizer Doug Hillier said they will be featuring other food options as well.

"We've got your traditional fare such as the deep fried mars bars... we've got some cultural food too. We really changed it, not that much, but just enough to keep it fresh every year," said Hillier.

Due to popular demand, Hillier said the fest will be featuring Sons of Kent beer as well as Budweiser and Budlight. In addition to food, there will be entertainment available for the whole family, including daily live music and carnival rides. Hillier also said they will be bringing some new entertainment this year -- a pet stunt show.

"Its a stunt show that famous dogs from movies travel around and they do stunts for us. This year they added a cat show. So it's a dog stunt show with the addition of a famous cat," he explained.

Hillier said with a large number of people expected to attend the event, there is a possibility that vendors can sell out of food. He recommends people arrive early to ensure they get a chance to enjoy their favourite ribs. He also suggests people come prepared for the heat.

"Wear sunscreen, that's for sure," he said. "I very must suggest wearing a hat. I don't want anyone to get heat stroke this weekend. I'm hoping that the forecast is going to be good and [people] are going to enjoy themselves immensely. "

Although there is a cost to purchase food, getting into the event itself is free of charge. Carnival rides cost $25 for an all-day unlimited pass and all other entertainment is free.

"Its free admission. The dog stunt show is free, the live entertainment is free. You can actually spend a whole day with us and not spend a nickel," said Hillier.

The Chatham-Kent Ribfest runs from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday. For a complete schedule of events click here.
