City responds after portion of Dougall Parkway buckles in heat

The City of Windsor went into action following reports of a south-end road buckling in the heat on Tuesday evening.

A caller to the WindsorNewsToday.ca newsroom reported that something looked off while travelling on Dougall Parkway near the Sixth Concession Road at around 6 p.m.

"There's like tectonic plate movement from the heat, and the road has gone up and kind of formed a speed bump," said the caller. "There were cars driving over it, and they went flying in the air."

City Engineer David Simpson said one of their crews was immediately made aware of the situation.

"We've already had two different contractors out working in that area, including work this (Wednesday) morning," said Simpson.

Road buckling or warping in heat is not exactly new in Windsor-Essex. Highway 3 in Essex County had several instances of buckling over the years.

Simpson said the issue is more common than people think.

"In terms of this road type, you're dealing with three inches of asphalt that's sitting on about an eight-inch underlying concrete panel," said Simpson. "So, many times when you're dealing with that and the fixed material, those concrete slabs can expand with the heat."

Simpson added that crews were hoping to complete any emergency repairs by Wednesday evening.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious vehicle damage.
