Ex-councillor faces more impaired driving charges

A former Chatham-Kent councillor is in trouble with the law again.

Arthur Stirling, 57, of Morpeth has been charged with impaired driving after a single-vehicle crash that happened on Creek Road between Maynard Line and English Line shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Chatham-Kent police said the driver lost control of his vehicle, left the road, and struck a tree and a telephone pole.

"Through investigation, police believed the man was driving while under the influence of alcohol," said Constable Renee Cowell, Public Information Officer with the Chatham-Kent Police Service in a news release issued on Wednesday morning. "He was arrested and breath tests were obtained."

Stirling was released pending a future court date on March 25, 2020.

It's the second time in 28 months that Stirling has been charged with impaired driving. He was previously charged in November of 2017 but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of careless driving on April 23, 2019 and was fined $800.

Stirling lost his Ward 2 council seat in October of 2014. He was also the executive director of the Children’s Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent but stepped down in June of 2015.
