Municipality looks to avoid congestion as turfed Erie Shore Drive residents pack

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is asking people who don't live along Erie Shore Drive to avoid the area, with the exception of volunteers who are helping the residents who have been forced to move out of their homes.

The advisory is in an effort to curb possible traffic congestion at the soon-to-be closed off road.

Residents living along a section of Erieau Road to 18416 Erie Shore Dr. were told to get ready to move as the road will close on March 9 for dike repairs. A state of emergency was issued on February 28 over the possible failure of a portion of the Erie Shore Drive dike.

More than 75 people have registered with the municipality so far to volunteer time to help affected residents. The volunteers' contact information was given to residents, who will contact them directly. Those who are still willing to volunteer are encouraged to contact the municipality at 519-360-1998 or ckinfo@chatham-kent.ca.

Free moving boxes are still available for residents at the Erieau Fire Hall from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Erie Shore Drive residents who have questions are asked to call the municipality at (519) 360-1998 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Residents who require emergency accommodations are encouraged to call the Chatham-Kent Homeless Response Line at 519-354-6628.
