Del Duca named new Ontario Liberal Leader

Steven Del Duca is officially the Ontario Liberal Party's new leader.

Over 3,000 party members gathered in Mississauga on Saturday to cast their votes.

According to Del Duca's biography on the Ontario Liberal website, the 47-year-old has been an active Liberal since the age of 15.

Del Duca was first elected to the Ontario Legislature in September 2012. In 2014, he was appointed to cabinet by Premier Kathleen Wynne as the Minister of Transportation. The former cabinet minister was up against five other candidates, including London resident Kate Graham, who congratulated Del Duca on Twitter shortly after his victory.

Other candidates included Michael Coteau, Brenda Hollingsworth, Mitzie Hunter, and Alvin Tedjo.

In a press release sent out after his win, Del Duca vowed to fight for Ontarians.

"As new Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party, I want to build an Ontario where genuine opportunity is real for everyone, where both entrepreneurs and workers can thrive, and individual success is only limited by talent, effort, and dedication,” said Del Duca. “Under my leadership, I can promise our members – and all Ontarians – that the Ontario Liberal Party will be relentless in the pursuit of progress and never stop fighting for a better Ontario.”
