Two new COVID-19 cases reported in London-area

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the London region has doubled.

The Middlesex London Health Unit has reported to the province that two more people are confirmed to have the virus, bringing the area's total number of reported cases since the outbreak began to four.

The first is a woman in her 20s who is a health care worker at the London Health Sciences Centre. She recently travelled to Las Vegas. According to the Middlesex London Health Unit, the woman worked at the hospital while she was symptomatic.

The second is a woman in her 40s who recently travelled to St. Maarten.

"Health Unit staff members continue to investigate both cases and close contacts of both women are being notified. This includes patients and LHSC staff who were seen by the healthcare worker or had worked closely with her," the health unit said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon. "Both women, and their close contacts, have been advised to self-isolate at home for the next 14 days."

Confirmation of the two new cases came hours after an internal memo from the London courthouse stated the building would be closed Tuesday after one of its workers tested positive for the virus.

A worker in her 50s at the Strathroy Medical Clinic was confirmed as the area's second case of COVID-19 over the weekend. She is also in isolation.

A Western University student in her 20s who tested positive for the illness at the end of January after returning to the city from Wuhan, China was the first reported case in the London region. She has since fully recovered.

Health officials in Ontario confirmed a total of eight new cases of the novel coronavirus on Tuesday. Currently, there are 180 active cases in the province. More than 11,100 people in Ontario, where a State of Emergency has been declared, have been tested for the virus.
