Pandemic will not stop Downtown Farmers Market from opening

There will be changes, but the Downtown Farmers Market will open for the season on May 30 as planned.

Organizers have been working closely with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit and Farmers Market Ontario to ensure social distancing measures are followed.

Some of those measures include limiting how many people enter the farmers market and how many people can be at any one booth at a time, handwashing stations, and making sure traffic flows in one direction. There will be two workers at each booth; one to handle goods and one to handle payments.

Until the province allows non-food related businesses to reopen, the market will also be limited to farm produce and products.

"Farmers markets are deemed an essential service," said Market Manager Steve Green. "Vendors will only be selling farm-to-table produce and products and, until further notice, there will be no entertainment, Kids Korner, Chef Demos and piazza."

This will be the market's fifth season. It will open at 8 a.m. on May 30 and will be open every Saturday between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. until October 31 at Pelissier Street at Maiden Lane.
