CK campgrounds set to partially reopen next week

There won't be any happy campers over the Victoria Day long weekend, however, plans are in place to partially reopen local sites.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) officials are working with public health officials to properly position themselves so that proper COVID-19 measures are in place when seasonal campgrounds reopen.

C.M. Wilson and Big Bend Conservation Areas will reopen on May 22 to allow campers to visit and care for their trailers. However, overnight stays will not be allowed. Facilities such as washrooms, laundry, and dumping stations will also not be open.

When the first phase of camping proceeds, the LTVCA said people will still be required to practice social distancing. Conservation officials said in case the camping season is further reduced, there will be accommodations or proportional refunds.

The Ontario government recently released a list of businesses that are allowed to re-open in the coming days -- but only if they are ready to.

As the first phase of the province's plan to reopen the economy takes effect on Tuesday, the Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is urging residents to maintain their efforts in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby has laid out some requirements for businesses and individuals to follow.

- Non-medical masks must be worn at any time where physical distancing of at least six feet cannot be adhered to (for example, in a golf cart).

- Businesses should not operate unless they are prepared to follow public health measures.

- Social gatherings of more than five people are still prohibited.

“This is not back to normal but it’s a start,” said Colby.

A full list of businesses that can reopen, along with local directives can be found on CK Public Health’s COVID-19 website. Residents with further questions may call the Stop the Spread Business Information Line at 1-888-444-3659.
