Local charities and organizations assisting the vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic can now get some extra cash to do their work.
The United Way Elgin Middlesex has put out a call for applications for the emergency community support fund (ECSF). Eligible agencies in the London-area can get a portion of $1.3 million being distributed through the fund, which was recently announced by the federal government in collaboration with United Way, Community Foundations of Canada, and the Canadian Red Cross.
"We are a proud local partner in locally administering the COVID-19 Emergency Community Support Fund funded by the Government of Canada, alongside the London Community Foundation," Kelly Ziegner, president & CEO of United Way Elgin Middlesex, said in a statement. "Together, we can keep our region strong by ensuring rapid relief reaches those who need it most."
While all registered not-for-profits providing supports and services to those in need throughout the COVID-19 crisis are eligible to receive funding, priority will be given to frontline social service organizations. That includes those serving low-income seniors, women, children and youth, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community, newcomers, Indigenous peoples, and members of racialized communities.
Applications for funding are being accepted until June 12. The money will be handed out to successful applicants by July 31.
