One additional death, four new COVID-19 cases in London-Middlesex

Another elderly woman in the London-area has died after contracting COVID-19, according to public health officials.

The Middlesex London Health Unit reported the additional COVID-19 related death and four newly confirmed cases of the virus on Wednesday. The woman, who was in her 80s, lived in a local long-term care home. She is the 22nd resident within the area's long-term care system to succumb to the virus. The number of deaths related to retirement homes stands at 10. In total, there have been 52 COVID-19 deaths in London and Middlesex County.

The number of confirmed cases since the outbreak began has risen by four for the second day in a row and now sits at 509.

The London Health Sciences Centre has 13 patients diagnosed with the virus in its care. That is down from 16 on Tuesday. The hospital confirmed another staff member has tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the number of infected employees to 42. However, not all of the cases can be traced back to the hospital,

Recoveries in the London-area remain unchanged at 367.

In Elgin and Oxford counties, there were no new cases or deaths reported by Southwestern Public Health over the past 24 hours. The total number of cases in the two counties since the start of the outbreak remains at 73. The death toll has been unchanged at four since April 22. Two more people who had previously tested positive for the virus have since recovered, increasing the area's number of resolved cases to 60.

Provincially, the number of cases confirmed on Wednesday was 292. This is the second day in a row the total daily number of novel coronavirus cases was below the 300 mark. A total of 26,483 cases of COVID-19 have been recorded in Ontario since the start of the pandemic.

There were 32 more deaths associated with the virus reported Wednesday, bringing the total number of deaths to 2,155. Of those who have died as a result of the virus, 1,352 were residents in long-term care homes across the province.

Provincial health officials said there are 298 outbreaks within long-term care homes, with one additional outbreak within the last day.

People requiring hospitalization due to COVID-19 account for 12.5 per cent of the cases. There are currently 847 patients battling the virus in Ontario hospitals, 150 of them are listed in the intensive care unit.

The total number of health-care workers to contract COVID-19 stands at 4,536.

Public health officials reported another jump in recoveries on Wednesday, with 20,372 of the cases now resolved.
