The Four County Labour Market Planning Board says the local unemployment rate rose again for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region.
In May, the unemployment rate rose another 1.2 percent to 9.3 percent in the region, and provincially, unemployment went up 2.8 percent to 11 percent overall. There were 4,300 jobs lost in May in the area, with 1,700 full-time and 2,600 part-time positions lost.
Goods-producing sector employees decreased by 2,000 in the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula Economic Region, with construction losing 1,900. Services producing sector employees went down by 2,100, with losses in professional, scientific and technical services at 1,300, and 800 fewer in transportation and warehousing.
“It’s hard to predict what our economy will look like post-COVID-19, however, we continue to monitor what employers and workers are reporting so we can respond to community needs,” said Gemma Mendez-Smith, Executive Director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.
