Pandemic forces Erie Shores HealthCare to rethink annual butterfly release

Erie Shores HealthCare, in partnership with the Spiritual Care Committee, is doing something different with its Annual Remembrance and Butterfly Release Memorial Service this year.

Because of social distancing guidelines, the event will be shorter and uploaded to YouTube.

The hospital in Leamington has just launched its own YouTube channel.

Over the past 18 years, the event has included a memorial service, butterfly release, and a short reception for parents who have suffered the loss of a child at Erie Shores HealthCare.

Normally, each family receives a dozen painted lady butterflies to release after a short eulogy, prayer, and musical interlude. As many as 80 people attend the ceremony each year.

"COVID-19 has really made us approach our patient engagement and community outreach in a different manner," said Director of Public Relations and Communications, Arms Bumanlag. "Events like these are traditions -- and we realize the impact it has on families. We hope that this digital offering is of comfort."

The ceremony can be viewed on Facebook or YouTube at 7 p.m. on June 24.
