It appears lady luck is not on the side of two Chatham men who are now facing charges after allegedly stealing some lottery tickets from a local convenience store.
Police said their investigation started when they were called to the scene in Chatham at around 8 a.m. Monday to respond to a shoplifting incident.
At that time, police learned that a man had entered the store and stolen a sleeve of lottery tickets. Before he took off, though, the man also allegedly bit the store clerk as he attempted to stop the man.
Police said they caught up with the suspect at a nearby motel and while they were arresting him, officers allegedly found some oxycodone and a counterfeit 200 Euro bill on him in addition to the stolen scratch tickets.
A 38-year-old man from Chatham was charged with robbery, possession of property obtained by crime, uttering counterfeit money, drug possession, and obstructing police by providing a false name. He was later released pending a future court date.
Police said while that man was making his getaway from the store, a second man who was also in the store at the time of the incident "seized the moment" by stealing some lottery tickets and a handful of lighters.
The second suspect was arrested at the scene, at which time police said they also found the stolen lighters and scratch tickets in his possession.
A 46-year-old Chatham man was charged with two counts of theft and two counts of possession of stolen property and he was also later released pending a future court date.
