Number of active COVID-19 cases continues to drop in CK

CK Public Health is reporting no new cases of COVID-19 and that one person has recovered from the virus.

The numbers released on Friday afternoon showed Chatham-Kent is down to seven active cases, none of which are being treated in the hospital. Four of the active cases are close contacts of a case and three are travel-related.

CK Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby said he is relieved the numbers are finally decreasing again. Colby said the cases increased in Chatham-Kent because people picked up the infections in Essex County.

"The big blip that we had and that was worrisome for a while, I lost some sleep over that, was part of a multi-county outbreak... and that was just our reflection of that," Colby said. "If you told five weeks ago that we'd be down to single digits now, I don't know if I would have believed it but I'm very, very happy to see it."

The number of cases in Chatham-Kent hasn't been this low in over a month.

Colby said mandatory masks haven't had any impact on the COVID-19 infection rates during the past two weeks. He added the public is generally complying by wearing masks but points out the latest spread was in social bubbles and not throughout the community. Colby added that his public health staff is not relaxing yet because the pandemic is not over and the virus is very contagious.
