Lambton Public Health says getting your free flu shot is more important than ever this year as we continue to navigate our way through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Starting Tuesday, October 20, residents can book an appointment by phone or online to get vaccinated at one of nine community clinics.
Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said there are early indications that the flu shot may offer additional protection against COVID-19, adding, the magnitude of the protection is still uncertain.
"There's some early, very preliminary, research in other countries that have experienced their COVID outbreaks at the same time as their winter season," said Dr. Ranade. "People who got the flu shot may have had less severe COVID disease and may have had less mortality from COVID."
Dr. Ranade said the flu shot is recommended for those six months of age or older. He's urging patience, noting this year's vaccine is in very high demand, much like toilet paper during the pandemic.
Those more vulnerable to flu and COVID-related complications include people aged 65 and up, those under five-years-old, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions, and those living in a care facility.
Appointments can be scheduled by calling Lambton Public Health at 519-383-8331 or by visiting www.lambtonpublichealth.ca/flu-shot.
There are also a number of pharmacy clinics available across the county for those aged five and older.
Residents are asked to contact their pharmacy of choice for further details.
