Canada-U.S. border closure extended

The border between the United States and Canada will remain closed to non-essential travel for at least another month.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau started off his daily briefing on Saturday morning by announcing that Canada and the U.S. have agreed to extend the border measures that are currently in place by another 30 days.

"This is an important decision, one that will keep people on both sides of the border safe," he said. "It's another example of the excellent collaboration between our two countries."

Trudeau originally announced on March 18 that the border would be closing to all non-essential travel, including tourism and recreation, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During his address on Saturday, the prime minister said the current agreement between the two countries regarding the closure would stay as is. This includes allowing the flow of essential goods.

"It's the same terms just extended for another 30 days," said Trudeau. "It will ensure that we continue to get essential goods and services back and forth across this border."

Trudeau added the Canadian government intends to work closely with its American counterpart to ensure the safety of residents and ensure that vital supply chains remain open.
