Drivers could be in for a slippery start to 2021 in southwestern Ontario.
Environment Canada has issued a special weather advisory with freezing rain possible starting Friday afternoon and continuing into Friday night.
The advisory, which was first issued Thursday morning, has been upgraded to a freezing rain warning for London-Middlesex, Oxford County, and Sarnia-Lambton.
The precipitation is expected to start out as snow or ice pellets late Friday afternoon before changing to freezing rain by early in the evening hours. At that time, freezing rain could also be mixed with ice pellets or rain at times, with freezing rain transitioning back to snow overnight.
Forecasters are expecting the freezing rain to be mixed with rain, adding that some ice buildup is possible as well.
Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent are still under a special weather statement because freezing rain is possible in those areas, but it is expected to be mostly rain at this point. Forecasters say rain may be briefly mixed with ice pellets or snow Friday afternoon before becoming mixed with freezing rain.
The system is making its way north from Texas, so there is still some uncertainty as to the timing of when it will make its way across the southwestern part of the province.
