London-Middlesex sees slight dip in COVID-19 cases

COVID-19 cases in the London area have dipped back into the double digits for the first time in several days.

On Sunday, the Middlesex-London Health Unit reported 85 new cases. For the previous four days, case counts had been in the triple digits, with 133 cases reported on Saturday and 105 on Friday.

There was however one new death logged on Sunday, marking the first death that has been reported in the region since Wednesday.

According to the health unit, Sunday's death was a man in his 60s who was not associated with retirement or long-term care home. To date, 194 people have passed away in London-Middlesex.

The region's total case count is now at 9,235 with 1,159 known cases, down from 1,186 the previous day.

Another 26 variant infections were identified for a total of 937. Of those, 935 are the B.1.1.7 strain that originated in the U.K. and two are the P.1 variant from Brazil. There are 190 cases confirmed with a mutation-positive sample.

Outbreaks remain at nine university residences in the region, two child care facilities and five schools. The latest school outbreak was declared on Saturday at Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School in London.

Meanwhile, an outbreak was declared over within two areas of the Parkwood Institute Mental Health Care building. An outbreak remains in the G5 unit of the facility.

Across Ontario, provincial health officials reported 4,250 new cases on Sunday, 18  more deaths and 3,338 additional recoveries.
