London police mourn death of officer

Condolences are pouring into the London Police Service after one of its officers died on Wednesday.

Police Chief Steve Williams shared the sad news in a brief statement posted to social media.

"I am saddened to report that we lost a member of our service today," wrote Williams. "We are offering our full support to the officer's family and loved ones, as well as our members. Please respect the privacy of the family and our members at this time."

With permission from the family late Thursday afternoon, the police force shared that 51-year-old Omar Hassan lost his life after struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Constable Hassan joined the London Police Service in 2000 after working as an officer with the Chatham-Kent Police Service. He leaves behind his wife and two teenage sons.

"Raising awareness of, and having conversations about, the mental health of our members is crucial," Williams said on Thursday. "We will continue our work towards de-stigmatization of mental illness and eliminating barriers to accessing mental health services and supports."

The news has been met with condolences and support for local politicians, police officials from other regions, and community members.

"This is terribly sad," Mayor Ed Holder wrote. "My sincerest condolences to the officer’s family, friends, and loved ones. My heart goes out to you, Chief, and all members of the London Police Association."

"So sorry to hear that. Thoughts and prayers going out to the family and all of our brothers and sisters at London Police Service," wrote Woodstock Police Chief and former London Police Deputy Chief Daryl Longworth.

St. Thomas Police Chief Chris Herridge and Halton Deputy Chief Roger Wilkie also expressed condolences on behalf of their police services.
