Chatham-Kent records COVID-19 shutout

Chatham-Kent Public Health reported zero new cases of COVID-19 and one resolved case on Friday, bringing the total number of active cases down to 35.

The rest of the numbers stayed the same as the previous day. The COVID-19 outbreak in the Medicine Unit at the Chatham hospital has six active cases and a small outbreak at an undisclosed workplace has one active case.

Walpole Island First Nation has two active cases and no new deaths.

Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) reported it had 11 COVID-19 patients in the Chatham hospital on Friday. Ten are local residents and one is not. One COVID-19 patient is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while another is in the Progressive Care Unit, and nine are in the Medicine Unit. Three of the nine are not related to the outbreak because the hospital is still accepting COVID-19 patients while it waits for the outbreak to be declared over. Two patients remain on ventilators in the ICU but neither is a COVID-19 patient.

The occupancy in the ICU remains at 60 per cent and the Medical, Surgical, Critical Care Unit is 85.8 per cent full.

The top health official in Chatham-Kent is reporting that half of the area's population eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccine will have one before the long weekend.

Chatham-Kent Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Colby said 50 per cent of those 16 and older will have a shot by the end of Friday. Nearly 45,500 doses in total have been administered by Chatham-Kent Public Health to date and there are more opportunities for those 18 years of age and older to get vaccinated at future clinics.

The Tilbury District Family Health Team will be hosting a clinic on May 27, 2021 at 22 Mill Street in Tilbury by appointment only. Those appointments can be booked by calling 519-682-2307 extension 303. The Chatham-Kent Community Health Centre will also be holding a clinic at its Wallaceburg site at 808 Dufferin Avenue on June 3, 2021. Those appointments can be booked by calling 519-397-5455 extension 322. Both of those clinics will be using the Moderna vaccine.

“This is great news! We are pleased to announce that pop up clinics are coming to your community! We want to make it easy for anyone who wants to be vaccinated to be able to do so. Offering this opportunity to our citizens in C-K is another step closer to getting us back to a sense of normalcy. Vaccines save lives!” said Primary Care Vaccination Lead Dr. Vishal Chawla.
