2021 Canada Day celebrations go virtual

Canadians are invited to celebrate the country's 154th birthday virtually again this year.

Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage unveiled plans for the 2021 Canada Day program dubbed "Lights on Canada Day" that will showcase artistic diversity and excellence with the help of some well-known Canadian talent.

"This year, more than ever, Canada Day invites Canadians to show empathy, understanding and resilience. It also offers an opportunity to reflect, reaffirm our commitment to address systemic racism and discrimination, and learn from each other with open hearts and minds," said Minister Guilbeault. "Most importantly, Canada Day allows us to hold a truthful, reconciliatory and inclusive dialogue while strengthening the ties that unite us and looking toward our country's future with hope and confidence while acknowledging darker episodes of our history."

The two-hour broadcast hosted by Canadian singers Véronic DiCaire and Jully Black and will begin at 8 p.m. eastern time on July 1. Viewers will be able to watch the stream on the Canadian Heritage's YouTube channel.

Popular artists expected to make an appearance include: Jann Arden, Tyler Shaw, Johnny Orlando, JESSIA and more.

Despite a virtual bash, fireworks will still be present to conclude the evening's performances. The Tim Horton's Canada Day Virtual Fireworks show is back this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Smartphone or tablet users will be instructed to point their devices at the sky to view the show as an augmented reality experience, or they can opt to watch the video montage online.

A contest is also available for Canadians to enter by filling out a quiz. Prizes include RICARDO Boutique and Giant Tiger gift cards on top of a grand prize worth $11,500.

Additional details about the show's itinerary, featured artists, prizes, and firework show can be found on the Government of Canada's website.
