Windsor-Essex's COVID-19 case positivity rate still dropping

July began with some mixed news concerning COVID-19 case rates in Windsor-Essex.

According to the latest epidemiological survey from the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, presented Friday morning, the local COVID-19 case positivity rate has once again dropped. This week's rate is at 1.2 per cent, a decline from last week's 1.5 per cent.

The rate was based on approximately 3,660 tests performed in the region last week, according to the health unit. Currently, Windsor-Essex ranks 11th among Ontario public health regions in case positivity. The provincial average is 1.4 per cent.

There was a good news-bad news note on this week's case rate per capita, however. The health unit reported that the overall case rate per 100,000 people is at 7.5, which is down from last week.

However, the seven-day average case rate is slightly up, from 8.4 last week to 9.4 as reported Friday.

The last days have been quiet for new cases of COVID-19 reported in Windsor-Essex. The figures for Thursday and Friday showed a total of two new cases recorded, one for each day. Both of them are under investigation.

The number of active cases in Windsor-Essex is at 54 as of Friday morning, with nine of them involving variants of concern.

434 Windsor-Essex residents have died, a decrease of one from Wednesday due to what the health unit called a data cleanup.

The health unit reported 15 patients receiving treatment for COVID-19 among the region's three hospital systems. There are two active outbreaks, one at a workplace, the other community-based.

As of Friday, 166,213 Windsor-Essex residents have received both doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, while 107,710 residents have had just one dose.
