Survey says a lot of Canadians still reticent about opening land borders too soon (Poll)

A new survey by Angus Reid suggests many Canadians are still leery of opening land border crossing with the U.S. too soon.

On the whole, 38 per cent of Canadians would like more than 75 per cent of all Canadians fully vaccinated before the federal government removes all restrictions. In Ontario, the result is slightly higher at 42 per cent.

Another third said they would feel confident COVID-19 will not spread if 75 per cent had two doses, while 22 per cent think the border should be fully open now.

The survey was taken between July 9 and July 13 and involved 2,040 Canadian adults who are members of the polling firm's Angus Reid Forum. It is considered accurate +/- 2 per cent 19 times out of 20.

Earlier this month, the federal government removed the mandatory quarantine for fully vaccinated Canadians returning to the country and over half think the timing was right. More than half of all respondents agreed with the decision.

Almost the same percentage disagree. Just about a quarter of respondents in Ontario think the federal government waited too long, and 22 per cent think it is still too soon.

The results suggest anxiety over COVID-19 is starting to abate. About 53 per cent said they were no longer concerned about the virus.

Of those who confessed they still felt some anxiety, almost one in ten said their fear would subside when 70 per cent of the country's population is fully vaccinated, while the same number said it would when there are no more COVID-19 cases. Others, 23 per cent, say they will fully relax when the virus is no longer a global problem.

While the number of total cases reported in Canada since March 2020 is now over 1.4-million, there were only 4,848 active cases across the country on Wednesday.
