Residents are asked to avoid the area of Erie Shore Drive as water has already begun to flood the roadway.
Early Friday evening, the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) issued a flood warning for portions of Erie Shore Drive in Chatham-Kent and areas along Lake Erie. Watershed and Information Services Manager Jason Wintermute said periods of flooding could continue throughout the weekend.
"Standing water is building up on properties with over 20 properties already observed to have standing water in the front yards," Wintermute said in a release. "There is water on the roadway in two locations. However, significant flow across the roadway has not yet been observed."
Environment Canada has forecasted that the winds may start to weaken later Friday night, which could provide some relief. However, strong winds from the southwest may reoccur at times.
"The general public is being asked to avoid the area to ensure that emergency services can access the area if required. The waves on the lakes can be strong, and the shoreline slippery," Wintermute said.
Those who live near the area are advised to keep pets and children away from the water as standing water can also present unseen hazards.
The warning is expected to remain in effect until Sunday.
