Two charged after drugs, weapons seized from Walpole Island property

Police have laid nearly 20 charges against a pair after an early morning raid at a property on Walpole Island First Nation turned up a number of illegal substances and a lethal weapon.

Multiple investigation branches with the Lambton County OPP, including the Canine Unit and Organized Crime Enforcement Bureau, along with the Walpole Island Police Service and Chatham-Kent Police Service attended a residence on Peters Road at around 5 a.m. Friday to execute a search warrant.

According to police, several items, including unspecified quantities of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine and hydromorphone were seized during the bust, along with a loaded firearm and ammunition.

As a result, a 30-year-old Windsor woman and a 41-year-old Walpole Island man face a combined total of 18 charges.

The woman is charged with:

• Two counts of possession of a schedule I substance

• Uttering threats

• Assaulting a peace officer.

Meanwhile, the man faces charges including:

• Possession of a schedule I substance,

• Two counts of possession with the purpose of trafficking,

• Unauthorized possession of a firearm,

• Two counts of careless storage of a firearm,

• Two counts of unauthorized possession of a weapon,

• Six counts of failing to comply with a release order.

Police say the Windsor woman has since been released from custody and is expected to appear in court at a later date, the Walpole Island man remains in police custody and was scheduled for a bail hearing sometime Friday.

Last summer, Walpole Island declared a State of Emergency due to a rising number of drug overdoses within the community.

This investigation follows a similar bust by police late last month, as the OPP continues to work with both Walpole Island and Chatham-Kent police to address the opioid-related crisis.
