Mental health takes centre stage at local Catholic school board

Trustees at the St. Clair Catholic District School Board have approved a budget for the next school year that focuses on mental health at schools.

The board has passed the $126 million budget for the 2022-2023 school year, which makes the wellness of all students and staff a priority and focuses on learning recovery for all students.

“The Board’s Always Ready Action Plan is the blueprint for the development of this budget,” said Director of Education Scott Johnson. “We continue to focus on balancing supports for all students through Special Education, Mental Health, Learning and Innovation and Risk Management.”

The budget includes $1.7 million in recovery supports. Other priorities of the 2022-2023 budget include continuing into year two of a three-year mental health and addictions strategy and an annual action plan for mental health, a focus on English language learners, continuing to revise the curriculum, including math for Grades 1-8, reading for all in Grade 1, and supporting literacy and numeracy for Grades 7 to 12.

Also on the radar for the next school year is supporting at-risk students for graduation, re-engaging secondary students in experiential learning pathways planning, and equipping every student and educator with board-owned devices and strong connections to the broadband network.

“I want to thank Amy Janssens and her team for once again delivering a budget that focuses on our students by making wellness and learning recovery a priority,” said Chair of the Board John Van Heck.

The approved budget will now be forwarded to the Ministry of Education for its approval.
