Animal surrenders temporarily suspended at PAWR

An overflow of animals coming through the doors at Pet and Wildlife Rescue in Chatham-Kent is forcing the organization to put a pause on accepting animal surrenders.

According to Operations Manager Myriam Armstrong, PAWR is currently experiencing an overflow of animals.

“We are a very busy shelter, with over 330 animals currently in our care,” said Armstrong. “It's not unusual at this time of year, however, the numbers seem to be increasing and we are bursting at the seams."

As a result, the organization is temporarily suspending its surrender services. Anyone who needs to surrender an animal is instructed to call the PAWR offices at 226-996-9969 and staff will provide guidance on the options available. For any urgent circumstances, exceptions will be considered. PAWR will also still be taking in stray animals.

According to Armstrong, PAWR currently has 18 dogs, 297 cats and 17 small animals, many of which have been surrendered or have come in as strays and not reclaimed.

“As you can imagine, we would love these animals to have permanent, stable and loving homes,” Armstrong added. “If you are planning to add a pet to your life, please consider adopting from us.”

PAWR is also currently running its Under One Roof fundraising campaign designed to raise funds for its daily operations, replenish its emergency medical fund and raise awareness about how the community can help reduce the number of animals that come into the shelter each year.

"It takes a lot of food, supplies and medical care to keep these animals under our roof,” said Armstrong. “The community’s support is so appreciated and needed so that we can keep abandoned and surrendered animals safe until we can find them a good home.”
