Local volunteer recognized for dedication to community service

A local resident is being recognized for his dedication to community service.

Bob Fletcher is this year's recipient of the Syd Kemsley Community Service Award by the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent.

Fletcher, a long-time club member and elder at First Presbyterian Church, is known for his generosity both inside and outside of the Kiwanis club.

"He has been one of the people on whom the minister can always count to help when situations and challenges arise," read a statement from the club. "Bob is generous both with his time and financial support of our ministry. One ministry, in which Bob really stands out, is the Saturday Breakfast which serves people in our community."

Now in its 20th year, the Saturday breakfast has served well over 150,000 free meals.

"Bob has had a significant role in the development and implementation of practically every aspect of this ministry," read the statement. "Many others volunteer at the Saturday Breakfast but Bob is the heartbeat of this important ministry."

Fletcher also involved himself in the establishment of the health teams in Chatham-Kent.

He has spent a great time on the road in several cities, stressing the need for doctors in the region. His team was successful in introducing many new doctors during a time when they were desperately needed.

"With his technical expertise, he was able to introduce a computer voice-recognition system whereby medical staff could bypass handwritten health reports by having their oral reports printed directly thus saving much time," read the report.

Fletcher received his award during the October 19 Kiwanis Club meeting held at the Active Lifestyle Centre.
