Halloween donation drives support food banks across Chatham-Kent

Another successful Halloween donation drive is in the books for the Tilbury Auto Mall.

The 3rd Annual Halloween Fright Night saw a large turnout on Saturday, both in people and donations for the Tilbury Food Bank.

"We had a ton of people show up, way more than we thought, which led to some long lines, unfortunately," said Adam Lally from Lally Auto Group. "We had hoped to kind of eliminate some of the waiting, but everyone seemed happy to wait, and the kids were pretty excited, so it was pretty great."

According to Lally, so many people came out that they lost count, but he thinks the total was almost 2,000 people.

The event was a drive-thru the last two years, but this year, the dealership made the Halloween-themed attractions into a walk-thru.

"Just seeing the smiles on the kid's faces, and doing something like this for the community is hugely rewarding, and we're pretty proud of it," said Lally. "The other thing is, as soon as we changed it to a walk-through, we realized we could have, and should have done something differently, so we're excited about making some changes and improving on it even more for next year."

Lally said they collected two pallet loads of non-perishables for the Tilbury Food Bank.

"We were really excited to bring those over to the Tilbury Food Bank," said Lally."They're in desperate need of all the help they can get right now, so we really appreciated everybody who brought in donations."

Students over at Ursuline College Chatham also ran a Halloween donation drive.

Renee Culverwell, who is one of the leaders of UCC's Care Club, said the students managed to get 65 routes covered throughout the community.

"The community was so generous, it's wonderful," said Culverwell. "There was so much that really, we didn't have time count."

Students will be loading a truck Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. to donate the canned goods to Outreach for Hunger.

According to Culverwell, upwards of 250 students helped out on Halloween night for the 15th Annual Lancers Scare Hunger.

"We sure didn't get to every street but we sure made a great effort to do so," said Culverwell.

Residents interested in donating can still do so Wednesday by dropping non-perishables off at the school before 11 a.m. or to Outreach for Hunger located at 10 Wellington Street West in Chatham.

"When the students came back last night with all of their canned goods, they were so excited," said Culverwell.
