Members of Chatham-Kent’s farming sector are shining a light on the importance of the agriculture sector while helping out a couple of local organizations.
The Kent Federation of Agriculture (KFA) will be collecting food and monetary donations Wednesday in recognition of Canada’s Agriculture Day.
Once again, the organization has partnered with the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent and Outreach for Hunger for the food drive.
"We're celebrating Canada's agriculture today," said Paige Handsor, who is the chair of the Canada Agriculture Day Committee. "Different agriculture businesses in the community have already helped us out by donating either product or cash donations."
KFA President Brad Snobelen said the organization has been giving back to the community on Agriculture Day for about 20 years.
"By doing this each year, we're able to help out hundreds of local residents," said Snobelen. "We will go out to the local producers, for example, our mushroom producers have been gracious enough to donate on a regular basis. That helps supply the shelves at local food banks."
Canada’s Agriculture Day, held on February 15, acts as an opportunity for producers to share their pride and help consumers gain a better understanding of where their food comes from.
"Today presents an opportunity to encourage people because there is always a need and it's nice to be able to work with the different producers for products that are needed," said Handsor. "Buying fresh and local continues to support our community."
All donations and proceeds raised Wednesday will be split between the two local organizations.
Each year, the Salvation Army of Chatham-Kent and Outreach for Hunger see thousands of community members come through their doors.
